Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery takes around 30-45 min. Gastric Bypass surgery takes around 1 hour to complete. Both of these surgeries are performed laparoscopically and under general anesthesia.
Placement of Gastric Balloon generally takes between 20-30 minutes during which you will be lightly sedated.
There are patients who return to work a week after Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass surgery. Despite this, we advise our patients to return to work at least after 1.5-2 weeks.
The first week after Gastric Balloon treatment you should not plan any heavy activity. Once your body has adjusted to the balloon, however, you can continue your normal activities.
Patients spend an average of 2 days in the hospital following Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass surgeries, or longer if there are any complications. When you return to your hospital room after surgery, you will be closely monitored by your nurses.
After Gastric Balloon treatment patient can normally go home one to two hours after the procedure is finished.
On average, it takes about 2-3 weeks for the incisions to heal and 6-8 weeks for the stomach staple line to heal after Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass surgeries.
You can get back to normal activities in 1.5-2 weeks. Patients can start walking the same day after surgery.
After Gastric Balloon treatment you should plan at least three days of inactivity to recover from the procedure. You will be able to resume normal activity sooner or later than this depending on how your body adjusts to the gastric balloon.
The amount of weight loss depends on the patient and the procedure. But it tends to be rapid in the first few months.
Gastric Sleeve patients lose 15% -20% of their excess weight in the first 3 months, 60-67% of excess weight in the first year and 53-65% in the 5th year.
Gastric Bypass patients have rapid weight loss in 6 months. Your weight usually stabilizes about 18-24 months after surgery. During this time, the patient loses an average of 60-70% of his excess weight. Research shows that it is possible to lose even 80% of the excess weight. If regular diet and exercise are performed, the desired result continues for a long time.
Gastric Balloon patients lose an average of 10-25 kg, but this figure may be even higher depending on the person’s weight before surgery.
Regular exercise and regular physical activity are the keys to stable weight loss after Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass surgeries. Exercising will help you reduce and maintain your weight gain. After being discharged from the hospital, walk for at least an hour every day. At first, choose a slow pace and increase your speed as your stamina improves. After six weeks, you can start regular training at higher intensity, which includes exercises to strengthen muscles as well as exercises to increase flexibility and endurance. Exercise at least three times a week for at least three hours (walking, cycling, swimming, fitness, etc.). Studies show that patients who exercise for at least 120 minutes a week lose an average of 4 kg more weight than those who do not. It is very important to start actively breathing immediately after bariatric surgery. A simple breathing exercise like blowing a balloon is very helpful. It needs to be done several times every hour. Such breathing exercises are needed to prevent congestive pneumonia.

Starting a regular exercise programme is highly recommended and will improve your chances of success. Your exercise routine should begin two to three weeks after the treatment. For your own safety, you should not drive until you have stopped taking strong pain medications and can move quickly and alertly to stop your car, especially in an emergency. Usually this takes 7-14 days after surgery.
Anatomical changes created by bariatric surgery cause many vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially within one year after the operation. Therefore, it is recommended to take multivitamin + mineral chewable tablets containing iron, folic acid and thiamine daily in the 3-6 months as they may be better tolerated and better absorbed.
Gastric Bypass patients should take daily vitamin and mineral supplements for a lifetime.
