World Disability Day 2021

World Disability Day has been accepted since 1992. Along with the decision number 47/3 taken by the United Nations. It was a formal decision by the UN on 3 December. Today, there are more than 1 billion disabled people in the world.

Origin of the International Day of People with Disability

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006. Which is a product of the UN’s long-standing efforts in the field of disability. World Disability Day is one of the most important decisions of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Due to the fact that development of the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

The theme of the 2019 International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been determined as “Ensuring the participation of persons with disabilities and their place in the 2030 development agenda”. Also, the theme focuses on empowering people with disabilities in line with the 2030 plan. While providing them with equal conditions with all individuals.

Approximately 15% of the world population, which is 7.7 billion people living in the world, consists of individuals with disabilities. Also, according to the 2017 data of the WHO; The world population is aging at an unprecedented rate.

Also, aging population and increase in chronic diseases lead to high numbers of people suffer from disabilities. Also, the risk of disability increases in parallel with aging. The aging of the population and the increase in chronic diseases are the main reasons that increase the disabled population.

Worldwide events held on this day. Also, these activities are free of charge and are voluntary. Also, celebration of this day varies, with government support and non-governmental organizations. Each year a different theme acquired for this day.
