What Causes Gynecomastia?

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is caused mainly by the imbalance between hormones. These are estrogen and testosterone. Testosterone controls male traits. On the other hand, estrogen controls female traits. These include breast growth.

Keep in mind that men have a small amount of estrogen hormones produced in the body. At the same time, women have a small amount of testosterone produced in the body.

Imbalance between hormones can cause health issues and gynecomastia is one of them. In male patients, if estrogen hormone is produced at abnormal levels than usual that can cause gynecomastia.

However, gynecomastia can occur naturally also. Which is in the different parts of men’s lives. Such as:

  • At puberty;
  • At mid-life.

In addition, there are other causes which can lead to gynecomastia. Such as:

  • Obesity
  • Imbalanced food and beverage intake
  • Kidney and liver diseases
  • Tumors in testicles
  • Tumors in adrenal glands

Finally, keep in mind that some of the medication that you use can also lead to the same. Before starting to take any medication, be mindful of the side effects.

Are there any symptoms of Gynecomastia?

There are some of the symptoms of this situation listed below. However, you should consult with a healthcare professional for the diagnosis. The reason is because everyone has a unique metabolism. Thus, not everyone can show all the symptoms as below. Some of these symptoms are:

  • The general symptom of it is the enlargement of breast(s) that can be easy to detect. This unusual growth can be uneven when compared with the breast nipple. It can feel firm and/or rubbery;
  • The nipple or the breast can be sensitive or painful when touched;
  • As mentioned previously, it can be experienced during puberty. In general, this effect is expected to go away within 2 years. If it persists more than that, consult with your healthcare professional.

Important Note: It is important for you to differentiate it from breast cancer. In order to keep your overall well being, you should not miss your general check ups.
